Curves and a booty are really sexy,” says Lauren Mellor, champion of modelling without starvation. She’s talking about UK retail brand John Lewis offering the world a new and confident attitude to fuller-figured women looking sexy in swimwear.

“I’ve seen it on the covers and pages of fashion magazines,” she says, “and it’s had a positive influence on younger girls, their confidence and their body image.”

There isn’t much that intimidates her – she wore next to nothing when she walked for lingerie brand Agent Provocateur back in 2008. “During my 13 years of modelling I’ve definitely developed a rhino-thick skin.” Now, living in New York, her native land is constantly on the enterprise management graduate’s mind.

“South Africa’s future is something I hope to help strengthen, even if it’s in the smallest way, by working with the welfare initiative, Bokamoso Education Trust. I’m also working on something to bring together my entrepreneurial education, my career in fashion, my love for South Africa and my charity work.”

That’s not the only thing calling her back home. “I miss sitting around a braai with an ice-cold beer in hand; that distinct smell of a Jozi thunderstorm in the air, with friends and family gathered around, having a laugh.”
