Understand Two Major Sects Of Jainism - Difference between Svetambara and Digambara

Jainism is a religion that originated in ancient India and is known for its emphasis on non-violence and self-control. Within Jainism, there are two main sects: Digambara and Svetambara.

Two Major Sects Of Jainism

Digambara sect

The Digambara sect, also known as "sky-clad," is known for its strict adherence to asceticism and nudity. Digambaras believe that true spiritual liberation can only be achieved by renouncing all material possessions, including clothing. They also believe that the Jina, or spiritual conqueror, is always in a state of nudity. This sect is primarily found in southern India and is known for its strong emphasis on monasticism.

Svetambara sect

The Svetambara sect, also known as "white-clad," is known for its more moderate approach to asceticism. Svetambaras believe that spiritual liberation can be achieved through a balance of material possessions and spiritual practices. They do not believe that nudity is necessary for spiritual liberation and instead wear white clothing as a symbol of renunciation. This sect is primarily found in northern India and is known for its strong emphasis on lay practitioners.

Difference between Svetambara and Digambara

Both sects share the same core principles of non-violence, self-control, and the pursuit of spiritual liberation. However, they have different interpretations of some key teachings and practices. For example, Digambaras do not recognize the authority of the Jain scriptures, while Svetambaras do. Additionally, Svetambaras believe in the existence of female Tirthankaras (liberated souls), while Digambaras do not.

In summary, the Digambara and Svetambara sects are two major branches of Jainism that have slightly different beliefs and practices. Both sects share the same core principles but have different interpretation of some key teachings and practices, and each sect emphasizes different aspects of Jainism.
